Poetry on wings

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.”

-Maya Angelou

A few days ago I heard a fluttering and found this creature trapped. It is ‘aglais urticae’ – a small tortoiseshell. I wonder if the little beauty survived outside afterwards. Where did it go?

As I start on new poetry and visual art for Winter, no doubt the butterfly will feature in my work again, just as it did in 1999. Back then it became my favourite symbol during a year of art-making that helped me to cope with my mother’s passing. She was 48. The natural world- if we pay attention- always offers us reminders of how beautiful, how very delicate and fleeting this life is.
